Just like making incredible wines, successfully molding and shaping glass is a detailed and precise process that needs to be adjusted for each particular situation. It starts with putting the glass over a mold in the kiln and then heating it in stages. At 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit the glass begins to soften. At 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit, the bottle will start to collapse. How much above 1,300 deg F you go depends on the specific glass and the desired final product, but a typically upper temperature is around 1,425-1,475 deg F. You want to spend as little time as possible between 1,300 deg F and the upper temperature, since devitrification (when glass changes into that of crystalline solids) occurs in that range.
As the temperature rises, the glass acts more like a liquid and gravity draws the heated glass down into the mold. Once the glass is at the desired shape – in this case the cheese board formation – the kiln is slowly cooled. This slow cooling process is called “annealing” and helps avoid any internal stress that can wind up encased in the glass as it solidifies. We definitely want a nice, smooth finish (again, just like our wine)! =)
Once the glass is cooled to room temperature, the cheese boards are ready to go to customers who want to serve their Sakura wines with their favorite cheeses or other perfectly paired food.
